Are you hesitant to speak English in front of others? Do you feel this language barrier is hindering your personal and professional growth? Foundations of English Language and Writing will help you grasp the basics of English grammar, with practical sessions incorporated to practice the language.

What will you learn

Foundations of English Language and Writing is designed to help you grasp the basics of English grammar, with sessions incorporated to practise the language. This course will improve your verbal and written communication skills used at home, university and workplace settings on a daily basis.

Irrespective of age and background, any student should be able to feel competent and confident while interacting in English.

Course Outline

Week 1
Introductions
The first week is reserved for instilling confidence within the students to interact in oral and written forms in English.
Week 2
Communication Skills
Focus on vocabulary, tenses, prepositions, and sentence structure to improve fluency and pronunciation. Additionally, students will be tested on their working knowledge of formal and informal conversations in English.
Week 3
Paragraph as a Unit of Composition
Students will learn the mechanics of a paragraph and how it forms an important unit in a larger body of work. From understanding a topic sentence to how it is constructed, students will hone their ability to read and write
Week 4
Basics of Grammar
Overview of grammatical rules as a way to ground and refresh the student’s understanding of the basics of the English language.
Week 5
Tackling the Written Word
Writing an essay, article, blog post, or report requires a specific understanding of grammar, structure, and technique. Students will learn how to read and write in meaningful ways by engaging with different reports, opinion editorials, essays, and short stories.
Week 6
The Final Countdown
Students will be required to independently write (format to be decided in class) and present in the last week of the session.
