MathCircles

Where young minds learn to think like mathematicians.

This is a free program designed to nurture curiosity and analytical thinking among school students through diverse sessions that extend beyond traditional school curricula, the program develops problem-solving, logical reasoning, and mathematical modelling skills, helping students recognize mathematics as a way of thinking rather than simply a collection of formulas and equations.

WHAT IS MATHCIRCLES?

A space to explore ideas, not just
answers

LUMS Math Circles is a non-profit outreach program initiated by the Department of Mathematics at SBASSE, LUMS in 2021 to give school students an interactive platform for exploring mathematical thinking. Independent of school and university syllabuses, sessions engage students in problem-solving and mathematical modelling — helping correct the common misconception that math is just formulas and equations, and revealing it instead as a way of thinking.

🧠
Critical Thinking
Questioning assumptions and reasoning through unfamiliar problems.
🔗
Logical Reasoning
Building arguments step by step, the way mathematicians do.
✨
Curiosity
Asking "what if" and following an idea wherever it leads.
🔷
Pattern Recognition
Spotting structure in numbers, shapes and sequences.
🧩
Problem Solving
Tackling open-ended puzzles with more than one path to a solution.
🤝
Collaborative Learning
Discussing, disagreeing and discovering ideas together.

Why Join?

Built for how young minds actually
learn

💡
Beyond the textbook
No worksheets or drills — sessions are built around ideas, games and open questions.
🎯
Small, interactive groups
Every student gets to think out loud, ask questions and be heard.
🎓
LUMS-facilitated
Sessions are designed and run by LUMS faculty and trained facilitators.
🌱
Confidence, not just skills
Students leave more comfortable being stuck — and enjoying it.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Structured for Different Learning Levels

Elementary
Ages 6–10
Playful, visual sessions built around games, manipulatives and stories — introducing patterns, shapes and logic without formal notation.
Middle School
Ages 11–13
Slightly more structured discussions that introduce proof-like reasoning, number theory and combinatorics through open-ended problems.

Finding the area under irregular curves — a problem that shows up everywhere in real life, from measuring river pollution spills to estimating flood risk from rainfall data.
Starting with the age-old challenge of measuring awkward shapes (think ancient Egyptian farmers re-mapping flood-washed land!), the session builds up to a powerful idea: break any irregular region into simple rectangles or trapezoids, add them up, and you have a surprisingly accurate estimate. This technique, known as numerical integration, is the gateway into calculus and the foundation behind how engineers and scientists analyze changing quantities in the real world.

From a polar bear puzzle to the curvature of space-time — circles and π at the heart of it all.
It opens with a riddle: a photographer spots a bear to their east, runs north, and photographs it looking south. The bear turns out to be a polar bear, because the only place this geometry works is the North Pole. That one puzzle sets the tone for everything that follows. From there, the session explores how circles and the number π appear everywhere in the shape of the Earth, in the distorted sizes of continents on flat maps, in the curved flight paths arcing over Greenland, and in the celestial sphere of stars rotating overhead. The session then scales up dramatically, moving from the surface of the Earth to the fabric of the universe. Drawing on Einstein’s General Relativity, it shows how space-time itself curves — and how π, the constant born from a simple circle drawn on paper, turns out to be woven into the very geometry that governs gravity, planetary orbits, and the structure of the cosmos.
