Most of us step into the supervisor role with no formal training at all. We supervise the way we were supervised and if we were fortunate in our own supervisors, that is a reasonable place to start. If we were not, we improvise.
Effective PhD supervision is one of the most consequential acts of academic leadership. The relationship between a supervisor and their student can make the difference between success and failure in a PhD and yet it is a relationship most supervisors are never formally prepared for. International research shows that doctoral students experience anxiety and depression at significantly higher rates than the general population, and supervision quality is one of the strongest predictors of PhD completion, student wellbeing, and research output.
This course is designed to close that gap. Adapted from the SBASSE Guide to PhD Supervision and material developed for the LUMS Learning Institute’s PhD Supervision Workshop, it offers faculty a structured, practical, and reflective guide to becoming more effective supervisors — one that fits easily into a busy schedule.
A professional development course for PhD supervisors and faculty, built on the SBASSE Guide to PhD Supervision (2025) and aligned with HEC Graduate Education Policy requirements. It combines video lessons, reflection activities, and practical strategies drawn directly from supervisory best practices and real LUMS PhD student experiences.

Dr. Walther Schwarzacher sets the context for the course — why supervision quality matters, what this course covers, and the one principle that underpins everything: mutual respect.
Presented by Dr. Ghayoor Abbas
This lesson introduces the seven core roles every PhD supervisor plays — and the distinct skills each one requires. From academic guide to critic, participants explore what each role looks like in practice and how to balance them effectively.
Presented by Dr. Ghayoor Abbas & Sabahat Asif
Drawing on both supervisor and student perspectives, this lesson offers practical strategies for the key stages of a PhD — from the first meeting to thesis submission. Sabahat Asif shares firsthand insights into what these strategies look like from a student’s point of view.
Dr. Walther Schwarzacher brings the course together — reflecting on the seven roles, the importance of how a PhD begins, and what it means to be a supervisor who makes a lasting difference.
